Chicago Scholars and the Amazing College Race

It’s been so long since I posted last the format’s been changed but never mind…

I’m excited about a big event coming up on Saturday that I’ve wanted to do for years. It’s called The Amazing College Race. Based on the CBS program where teams are sent to exotic locations and given puzzles and tasks to perform in order to win a big prize, the Chicago Scholars version has 188 Scholars and 56 mentors traveling in teams to one of 9 area colleges to do the same.

It’s an opportunity for our Scholars to travel the city, develop some leadership skills, and learn about college in a way that’s fun and exciting. They’ll receive envelopes with clues in them when they get to their designated campus and will have to decipher the clue, find the spot, perform the task, and get to the next one before the other teams. They them have to visit a historic Chicago site, and finally make their way to Buckingham Fountain for a huge reunion (along with several hundred thousand people here for the Air and Water Show–who said calendars don’t matter!!!)

If you have no idea what I’m talking about, tune in on Saturday when we’ll have some live video feeds, twittering by kids and mentors at the ChicagoScholars Fnd Facebook site, and maybe more. (Add us as a friend and you’ll be able to see the tweets. Not sure how the video will happen yet but I’ll let you know.)

Thanks to all the participants: University of Chicago, IIT, UIC, DePaul, Loyola, Northwestern, Roosevelt, North Park, and Columbia College, all of whom are providing lunch and support on campus and who have devised the clever and even in some cases diabolical clues!. Special thanks to North Park for providing our staging area and breakfast in the AM, and to Columbia College for providing the videographers, social media support, and the grand prize pizza party to the winning team.

There’ll be Google+ Hangout video as well as Facebook and Twitter but I have no idea how that’s going to work yet. Crash course on Saturday at 7:00AM!!!! Then I’ll pass it on.

  1. Congratulations! What a great idea. Wish I could move back to Chicago to participate. This idea could spread to all metro areas with enough colleges, and I hope it takes off.
